Entry Level

Developed by early Christians in Egypt, the Copts, Coptic binding was used from roughly the 2nd century AD to the 11th century.

This workshop explores the evolution of single quire codices to the modern simple Coptic binding (exposed spine binding) using simple tools and beautiful materials. During the lecture portion of the workshop, we will discuss the history of traditional Coptic bindings and modern sympathetic techniques.

The instructor will introduce the standard language and vocabulary of the bookbinder and the trade. Bookbinding tools and materials will also be covered above and beyond the topic of Coptic bindings. All tools and materials are included in the cost of the workshop, including the decorative paper used for the covering material.

Students will leave the workshop with a fundamental understanding of bookbinding, the knowledge, and experience of creating Coptic bindings, the history of the structure, and one hand-bound Coptic book of their own creation.
